Abdifatah Shafat joined the department of Islamic Studies at the University of Bayreuth in the fall of 2015. His research project concerns Somali-speaking students from Garissa town of northeastern Kenya who study in Saudi Arabian universities, and the discourses they spawn upon returning home.

Using primarily ethnographic investigation, the study aims to interrogate how the changing configurations of higher Islamic education and the exposure accompanying such an education have unleashed local debates on what true Islam is or how to live as a Muslim. It does so by juxtaposing traditional Islamic learning (xer in Somali) and Islamic studies in modern Saudi Arabian universities and how each produces a particular way of understanding and interpreting Islam. In addition to Islamic education and transformation, Abdifatah is also interested in topics such as authority in Islam, Islamic reform movements, and Islamic scholarly networks in the Horn of Africa.
